Research Services
URC offers facilitation services to support development of research capacity and to streamline and standardise research support processes toward improving the quality of research. URC accepts and facilitates implementation of research programmes or projects on behalf of UNESWA. It also expedites institutional approval for sponsored or in-house research. URC’s guidelines on research integrity provide support to UNESWA’s research community to ensure regulatory and institutional compliance and promotion of highest scientific and ethical standards in research.

Accounting
Services
The University of Eswatini is committed to supporting efficient and compliant award management. It is a shared responsibility of the principal investigator, department, faculty, centre and core offices to ensure understanding of award conditions and University policies that meet sponsor expectations for deliverables, prior approvals, financial controls and reporting requirements. Contracts and grants accounting services that provide award financial support are vested with the Bursary. The Bursary addresses questions or inquiries concerning project set-up, allowability of costs, billing, accounts receivable, financial reporting, cost sharing, and closeouts.
URC hosts a competitive internal grants programme supported by UNESWA for projects and/or collaborative partnerships that targets interdisciplinary research initiatives with potential for external support. The internal grant is aimed at supporting, encouraging and inspiring recently appointed early career academics to enable them establish a research career. The Research Funding Opportunities page is updated regularly with both internal and external funding opportunities. The page for external funding opportunities provides links to relevant and credible searchable databases.

URC assists in planning, coordinating and implementing interdisciplinary research initiatives involving multiple faculties, departments, or institutions to support new research programs at UNESWA. URC peer-reviews, offers guidance on structure and other questions, and provides UNESWA Authorized Official signature on grant proposals. Support services are provided to facilitate independent, objective, and technical review. This page has documents available for download for further guidance.
UNESWA conducts research in compliance with established rules, regulations, policies and procedures. In support of scientific integrity, URC develops and implements research compliance programmes and coordinates activities with various compliance offices and committees. URC is also responsible for reviewing and facilitating the investigation of research misconduct, conflict of interest or other research integrity deviations. All researchers are encouraged to obtain training in the responsible conduct of research as when advertised by URC. The Technical Advisory Committee [Link] and Editorial Boards of UNESWA Research Journals provide support to ensure scientific integrity of research.
At UNESWA, the ethical conduct of research is promoted as part of research training and supervision, research reports and manuscripts review processes, short courses for staff and students, and engagements with national experts. Ethics clearance refers to the process of review and decision-making on 1) the risk level of the study, 2) whether it involves vulnerable participant/subject, 3) whether it will negatively impact on the environment, 4) the risk to the reputation of the university, as well as 5) the nature of the study. There are three committees at UNESWA that provide ethical clearance for research by students and staff. The Human Subjects Research Ethics Committee , the Animal Research Ethics Committee , and Environmental and Bio-Safety Research Ethics Committee provide support to ensure ethical conduct and success of research. All these committees are integral to the research governance structure of the URC but operate under Senate instruction to provide uniform and effective protection of the rights of animal or human subjects and environments in research. This page has documents available for download for further guidance.

TECHNICAL
Advisory Committee
The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) assists URC in its mandate and serves as a link between the Centre and researchers at large within Faculties of the University of Eswatini.
- The primary role of the TAC is to advise and support the development, implementation, review and dissemination of all research and evaluation activities at UNESWA. The TAC advises the URC on research priorities, challenges and opportunities facing faculties and identifies strategic initiatives to enhance research activity within UNESWA. The TAC supports faculty members in becoming global research leaders and positions them for success. Specifically, the committee will:
- Peer-review internally and externally funded research and projects proposed by staff members and provide recommendations.
- Lead in identifying, developing and implementing multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary collaborative research among university based researchers and with governmental agencies, resource managers, communities, non-governmental organizations, and industry.
- Identify changing internal and external regulations and requirements for research and inform researchers, policies and processes to comply with such developments.
- Assist in collating data and information (indicators) for tracking research performance at Departmental and Faculty levels
- Support setting up and maintaining themed research and research teams for purposes of mentoring and continuity in research work.
- Advise on the dissemination of research and evaluation findings and conclusions, particularly in relation to its utilisation as a mechanism to influence policy, practice and training.
- The TAC is composed of Chairs of Faculty Research Committees representing the breadth of UNESWA’s research enterprise. Participation in this committee is an excellent opportunity to help support the UNESWA’s research mission and impact its strategic priorities.

University-wide
Ethics Committees
URC requests Faculties and Institutes to submit names of experts with subject-matter, research or working knowledge to constitute three University-wide Ethics Committees whose purposes and membership are summarised below. The Committees are integral to the research governance structure of URC but operate under Senate instruction to provide uniform and effective protection of the rights of animal or human subjects and environments in research.
The Committees reassure users and non-users alike, both inside and outside the University, that research that involves animal and human subjects, environments and organisms, is properly governed and conforms to the highest ethical standards, where such involvement is justified. The Committees also commit researchers and instructors to the ethical conduct of research and experiments that conform to UNESWA policies and procedures and attendant external requirements. The corresponding committees are:
